Field Court Infant School is voluntary controlled and provides high quality education for children of four to seven years of age. We are based within the heart of the Parish of Quedgeley to the south of the city of Gloucester.
Field Court Infant and Junior Schools are the original providers of education in Quedgeley, formally known as Quedgeley Primary School and housed in buildings where Quedgeley Community Centre now stands in School Lane. Our current building in Courtfield Road was built in 1979 and the Junior part of the school moved into it. In 1984 additional classrooms, one permanent and one temporary, were added, together with two small cloakrooms. The school then housed Infants and the Junior children moved into new buildings on the same site. We then became Field Court Infant School.
The school population grew and required an eighth classroom. We used the Elliott building which had housed our Centre for the Blind and Partially Sighted children. The Centre which served the whole community, moved into new accomodation on the same site. In 1993 a further Elliott building was added and internal reorganisation to the main building led to having a new library, staff room and two stock stores - one for general use and one for administration purposes. The catering for lunchtime meals was transferred to the Junior School kitchen.
In August 1996, building work began through the major alteration of the three classrooms which led on to the playground. Three new reception classrooms, cloakrooms and toilets, and a second playground, were completed in March 1997. The Governing Body requested the retention of the double Elliott building in order to develop for pre-school provision, shared between the school and local providers, on our site. These playgroups - previously Field Court Fieldmice and Ladybirds, amalgamated in 2006 and was renamed Little Owls.
The school was now contained in one building. The hall, in the centre, is well equipped for physical education, drama and music activities, and comfortably accomodates the whole school community . It also doubles as a dining room at lunchtime. Nine classrooms lead off from corridors surrounding the hall.
Work on an outdoor environmental area including a pond, vegetable patch and a friendship garden, began in the Spring of 1997 to support science and geography in particular. We are able to share the large playing field with the Junior School.
Since the erection of security fencing aound the whole site in 2002, in conjunction with the Junior School and with a grant from the LEA, vandalism has decreased markedly. We are now able to continue to concentrate on improving the school gardens and general environment without fear of wanton damage.
September 2003 saw the official opening of the Early Years outdoor play area. This is a large covered area leading from the YR classrooms and has gated access to the playground. The area has soft flooring and a variety of large hands-on activities. It is used throughout the year and in all weathers. Although used primarily for the Reception children, Y1 and Y2 also have access to it.
During September 2005, the new Adventure Playground, which was built during the summer 2005 break, was introduced to the whole school. It's purpose if for use during lunch and break times as well as during structured lesson activities. Zones were created for lunchtime activities giving all children a chance to experience a variety of activities and games on a rota basis.
January 2007 saw the official opening of our Outdoor Classroom. Besides being built for use during lessons, providing both shade and shelter, parents can also use it as a waiting area when collecting children from their after school clubs.
In May 2008, the whole school and Y3 of the Junior School all gathered to take part in the unveiling of the Story Chair as part of the memorial service of Mr Inman, an incredible teacher loved by all. Shaded by the willow tree, the children enjoy listening to stories here in the open air.
September 2009 saw the opening of a new brick building designed especially for the before and after school club. Currently called The Cool Club, but soon to be renamed 'Interactives', it was formed in 2007 and provides a caring, safe and stimulating environment for the children of working parents.
There is also Little Owls, an independently run pre-school, on site. Their staff work closely with our YR staff ensuring a smooth transition from pre-school to our school.
We aim to keep this page updated as the school continues to grow....
